My Chosen Charity: Miscarriage Association of Ireland

As I was pondering what charity work to do this year, the answer became very obvious and yet, it was one that I had most resistance too. So I knew I had to do it.

Charity work, whether volunteering and fundraising, is something that’s important to me. I haven’t done much of either this year and I realised last week that the challenge of charity work gives me a sense of purpose.

In 2010, I had a miscarriage, two months before my 29th birthday. It’s something I see as a reset point in my life. One of those moments when your life changes and you have changed. There’s no going back.

I eventually began to see the miscarriage as a mixed blessing. My life did change for the better. Within two months I’d left an unhealthy relationship and was living on my own. This began the greatest journey of personal growth of my life.

The miscarriage was a reset point in my life because I had to energy to pretend my life was what I wanted it to be. I was deeply unhappy, and I had been covering it up by keeping busy. After the miscarriage, grief had knocked any get up and go out of me. I had, in a way, become a blank slate.

For the first year after the miscarriage, I tried to cope by myself, and let time heal. Time didn’t heal. I started having panic attacks and went to see a counsellor for a year. That is when my life truly began to change for the better.

Roll on to 2016, and I’m in a much happier, and healthier place. I have a wonderful support system around me. I’ve been single all this time and that’s ok. I’ve been too busy figuring me out. I’ve been busy building a wonderful support network of family and friends, and trying to build a business.

I haven’t told many clients about my miscarriage. Even though it’s something that happens to one in four women, it was something I couldn’t talk about.

However, true healing comes when you can help others. So I set up a fundraising page for the Miscarriage Association of Ireland on idonate.ie. If you’d like to donate, you can do it online here: https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/11360156_miscarriage-association-of-ireland.html

Using my skills and talents, I’d like to hold fundraising events for the Miscarriage Association. I just have time for two every month. Would you like to hold a 2 hour workshop in your premises or home in aid of the Miscarriage Association. It is called Mind Yourself: Coping Skills for daily life. It is a meditation and stress management workshop. Each person will be charged €10, with all proceeds going to the Miscarriage Association.

If you’ve had a miscarriage, I’d love to hear from you.

Lots of love,

Tracy xxx

The No. 1 Stressor

In the last two weeks, I conducted a survey among clients. I wanted to find out what bothered them the most. The results were so interesting.

Unsurprisingly, what came through the most was the need for more time, or better able to manage time. We all have the same 168 hours a week. How we manage that time is so important for our personal well-being. Yet between work, family, friends, exercise, eating, traveling, shopping, social media, TV, cleaning and sleeping, with such a long to-do list, it can be hard to discern priorities. It becomes exhausting.

Last month, I spoke with one woman for the Relax From Stress Clarity Call. The clarity call is a free call for people to gain clarity and what is really stressing them. Stress is such a vague term, it covers a multitude of stressors, including time, finances, family, lack of self-confidence/self-belief/self-worth/self-esteem, relationship management, grief, work…the list goes on and on.

So, back to the Clarity Call with this woman, I’ll call her Deborah for the sake of this blog. Confidentiality is an important part of my service as often people don’t like people knowing their personal business. So Deborah was stressed. It was something she kept repeating. “I’m stressed, I just don’t know anymore”. When I asked her what was stressing her, she said, “I don’t know, I just have too much to do”. As we talked, I learned that Deborah had two jobs, one as an employee, and another as a self-employed person. She had early 5am starts as an employee, and long days when she was working in her business.

As we chatted, we realised that time management and boundaries were causing the most stress. So we talked about time management, once that was settled, she’d have the headspace to deal with boundaries. With time management, I told her that I’d experimented with putting the TV in the spare room, just to see what would happen. One of the great myths is that we’re able to multi-task. We can’t. We work far more effectively working on one thing at a time.

When I spoke to Deborah a couple of days later, she had set a new evening routine. When she got home from work, she cooked dinner, and watched TV. Then as soon as dinner was over, she switched off the TV, and just focused on work. She found she was getting through her work much quicker, and she was sleeping better. She had also set boundaries with clients by setting time management limits…she didn’t take any evening calls from clients after a certain time.

How is your time management? Is there anything you can do differently, to make life a little easier?
